Can Linux Replace Windows?

Aug 03 2007 Published by JMorris under General

Digg Description: “So, while the success of Firefox shows that people wanted an alternative to Internet Explorer, I really do think Vista is the tipping point for a desire for an alternative in the OS arena. People are tired of Microsoft. They are tired of the barrage of security concerns, of the blue screens, the lock-ups.”

As stated by another Digger:
“CAN Linux replace Windows? Yes.
WILL Linux replace Windows? There’s your question.”

Well said, but I would like to add the deciding question that has kept me stuck on Windows for way too long…

Will Linux improve native support for Windows Applications, or will companies start providing native Linux support for their applications?

Yes, I’ve tried Crossover Office/Wine, VMWare, and even alternative applications; However, after paying a lot of money for applications like Studio MX and Office 2003, both of which I rely on daily, I’m not big on adding bloat to my already overworked workstation just to be able to run Linux. Also, as nice as Nvu, Gimp and OpenOffice are, I simply don’t like them. I like Studio MX and Office 2003. That’s why I bought them.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Linux and I work on it every day (web servers), but until Linux has better native support for applications that are critical to my daily functions, my use of Linux will be restricted to the CLI on web servers.

The first Bentley to top 200 MPH! The Continental Speed GT

Aug 01 2007 Published by JMorris under General

Bentley’s showing off its new Continental Speed GT. It’s got 600 horses under the hood and can hit 202 miles per hour, making it the first Bentley in series production to reach the double century mark. Bentley says it can turn a zero-to-60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds. And it even gets lower carbon dioxide emissions than the previous version.

Pardon me while I dabble up the puddle of drool that has just collected on my chest. Now THAT is a Sport Coupe!

What’s the point of having a 200mph car? To hell if I know and I certainly don’t care. I want one!

The freaky origins of Christian rock

Aug 01 2007 Published by JMorris under General

One of the earliest and most influential Jesus freaks was Lonnie Frisbee, a tripped-out young man who grew up in Orange County, Calif., saw God on LSD, and became a Christian in the Haight.

LOL! As a Christian who is an ex-LSD addict, this doesn’t surprise me a bit!

A brief history of SPAM

Aug 01 2007 Published by JMorris under General

The New Yorker traces the history of unsolicited e-mail advertising pitches to a 1978 send via the Arpanet network by a marketer for the Digital Equipment Corporation; to the present time with more than a hundred billion unsolicited messages clogging the arterial passages of the world’s computer networks every day…

It’s pretty cool reading about this in New Yorker, but it was even better hearing the story directly from an ex-employee of Digital who was around in those days.

Still, a fascinating read.
