Finally! PkbCS is Alive!

Jan 31 2007 Published by JMorris under Announcements

After over 2 years of owning my business, PkbCS, LLC (http://pkbcs.com/) is finally online. Up until a few weeks ago, I was too tied up with my ´day job´ to finally get my business´ website online. However, due to my recent employment change, I finally had the time to get the site live.

Compared to most of my other projects PkbCS.com is a pretty small project, but it represents some of the best coding I´ve done. The site is right around 80% completed, so it isn´t quite finished yet. I want to improve the site´s accessibility some more and add the Freebies, Partners, and Shop pages to help promote back links to the site and sell some of my more advanced designs, but other than that, the site is pretty much done. I´d also like to improve the SEO of the site because, at present, the site comes across more as a Project Manager´s site than a Web Designer´s or Server Administrator´s site.

SEO will probably be the most difficult aspect of this site for a couple reasons. The biggest reason is that there isn´t one particular niche the site fits into. Since I offer CMS deployment and customization, eCommerce deployment and customization, Web server provisioning and administration, Blog deployment and customization, Standards compliant web design, Search engine optimization, and Website monetization services, it´s a little difficult to optimize the content for the right keywords. Nevertheless, this is an opportunity to exhibit the skills I´m selling. :-)

Even with the challenges I´m facing, I´m really excited about the launch of this site. If all goes well, this will allow me to work from home so I can attend to the needs of my family while still earning enough money to support them in a reasonably comfortable fashion. Here´s hoping all goes well.

Latest Project

Jan 28 2007 Published by JMorris under General

Sorry I haven´t been around much the last few days. I´ve been working on my latest website, CurrentMix

This project is a complete departure from all my previous projects. Normally, I´ve focused on technology related sites whether it be web design and related subjects or IT related sites. CurrentMix is more of an entertainment Blog. You could almost say that it´s a Multimedia Blog. The main concept behind this site was to produce an entertainment portal where people could join together and just have a good time.

This project was good for me in a lot of ways. One of which is that I´m now more familiar with the excellent Blog platform, WordPress. I was really surprised at all of the plug-ins available that enabled me to customize the site just the way I wanted it.

Don´t get me wrong, I have no plans of making a wholesale changeover to WordPress from XOOPS. XOOPS is still my #1 choice for community based websites. However, experience has taught me that there are times when your preferred tool is not the best tool for the project. That was the case with CurrentMix. The requirements for CurrentMix demanded the ability to add Multimedia content in a very simple way. In other words, NO HTML. XOOPS doesn´t offer this quite as well as WordPress does, so I used WordPress.

I´ve still got a long ways to go with the site. The basic functionality is there and there is already quite a bit of content, but there is a lot more I want to add. I also want to replace the current design with one of my own original works that is more appropriate for the subject matter on the site. That will have to come later though. I´m more concerned with ironing out the functionality. The current design is very pleasing anyways. The designers did a fantastic job.

Well, enough rambling. Check it out and let me know what you think. As always, constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated.
